When to Book Your Senior Session
Choosing the right time for your senior session can make a big difference in the look and feel of your photos. Here’s a breakdown of the best times of the year to schedule your session.
WHAT TIME OF DAY SHOULD I BOOK?
Within 4 hours of sunset has the best natural light on a sunny day, so Google the sunset time for the day you are looking at and work backwards from there.
Golden hour is the hour before sunset, which will give you a dreamy look and is a coveted time slot if you can snag it!
Generally, avoid 10 AM – 2 PM because the sun is directly overhead and is not flattering. The only time it’s not a challenge is if we are in a shaded area or if it’s an overcast or cloudy day.
JUNE
Get it done and off your list! Summer has a way of seeming like it will last forever, and then before you know it, summer is almost over and practices are starting up again. Senior year is a very busy year, so getting this important item off your list early will reduce stress later.
JULY
July is best if you want a lot of flowers in your photos, but be aware, this is my busiest summer month and books up VERY quickly.
AUGUST
August is reserved for team photography and is not available for senior photos. Exceptions include backup dates for senior sessions that had to be rescheduled due to weather.
SEPTEMBER
Limited spots available in September due to it being school picture month. Also, you are back to school and probably busy… now you are thinking, dang it, I should’ve done this in JUNE!
OCTOBER
If you love fall color, usually mid to late October is prime color.
WINTER
I love a good snow day! If there’s snow on the ground and it’s not windy or brutally cold, text me—I’m usually available most days in the winter. Studio sessions are a great option in the winter too!
SPRING
The leaves don’t usually come back until late April, and most seniors have full-blown senioritis at this point, but spring photos can be a nice option for those who weren’t able to get photos earlier in their senior year. It’s also a great time for cap and gown sessions or studio sessions.
